Auction of FM Broadcast Construction Permits Scheduled for February 2, 2027; Comment Sought on Competitive Bidding Procedures for Auction 114
In this document, the Federal Communications Commission (the Commission or FCC) announces an auction of certain FM broadcast construction permits. The Office of Economics and Analytics (OEA) and the Media Bureau (MB) seek comment on minimum opening bid amounts and the procedures to be used for this auction, which is designated as Auction 114.
What this rule actually says
The FCC is auctioning off FM radio broadcast construction permits on February 2, 2027. This document is asking the public for feedback on how the auction should work—specifically on the minimum bids required and the bidding rules. It's a procedural announcement about radio infrastructure, not a new regulation.
Who it applies to
This does NOT apply to AI founders unless you're literally building FM radio broadcasting infrastructure.
- If you're building: medical scribes, hiring assistants, support chatbots, content moderation tools, or any other AI software → you can stop reading now.
- If you're building: FM radio transmission equipment or planning to operate an FM radio station → this might apply to you, but you should talk to an FCC lawyer, not read an indie founder guide.
- Jurisdiction: United States only.
- User data scope: irrelevant (this isn't about data regulation).
What founders need to do
Nothing. This regulation has zero relevance to software-based AI products. If for some reason your company owns FM broadcast licenses or is planning to bid on construction permits, then:
- Monitor the FCC's official Auction 114 page for the final rules (ongoing, 30 seconds per month). The FCC will publish final bidding procedures closer to the February 2027 auction date.
- Hire an FCC specialist or broadcast lawyer if you're actually considering bidding (1-2 weeks to find one, essential).
The FCC will publish a final order with actual rules sometime between now and early 2027. Wait for that before worrying about compliance—the current document is just a request for public comment.
Bottom line
Ignore this completely unless you're in the FM radio business, in which case get a lawyer.
